Yamaha P115 Review

Yamaha P115 Review

The Yamaha P115 is one of the latest portable digital pianos released by Yamaha. This new model replaces the previous Yamaha P105, which was one of Yamaha’s best-selling portable digital pianos. So, how does the P115 stand up to its predecessor and other portable digital pianos on the market today?

The Yamaha P115 is a truly portable piano as it weighs only 26 pounds. It also has some nice upgrades from the model it replaces. It has a full set of 88 keys which are Yamaha’s Graded Hammer Standard keys. This makes it a good buy for anyone who wants to play on a portable digital piano, but not lose the touch and feel of an acoustic one.

The piano also sounds great for its price. It uses a sample from Yamaha’s CFFIIIS concert grand piano. Even when played loud, the piano sounds great and this is something that isn’t always possible on digital pianos. The sound range will suit even professional musicians. All this makes the Yamaha P115 a good all-around portable digital piano.

But, why should you buy the Yamaha P115? Here are more of its features in depth.

In-depth Look at the Yamaha P115

Yamaha P115B Digital PianoSo, what sets the Yamaha P115 apart from other similarly priced portable digital pianos?

A very important feature of a portable digital piano is making sure that playing the keyboard resembles playing an acoustic piano. In this respect, Yamaha has done an amazing job on their keyboards. The P115 has Yamaha’s Graded Hammer Standard keyboard. This mimics how real piano keys work.

In the price range that the P115 is in, it can be sometimes difficult to get key actions that are close to a real acoustic piano. In the previous Yamaha portable models, these seemed to be a bit ‘plastic’ sounding. However, this has been improved with the P115

The Graded hammer technology means that there is greater resistance on the keys towards the bottom and less resistance on the keys near the top.

The playing experience is also enhanced by the 4 touch sensitive levels. These can be set to soft, medium, hard, or turned off altogether.

Sound quality

The sound quality of the Yamaha P115 has been greatly improved. Yamaha has increased the polyphony from 128-note in the previous model to 192-note polyphony in the P115. This is an important factor in sound quality. The higher the polyphony, the closer the digital piano will sound to the real thing.

Another nice feature on the P115 is a Sound Boost option. This works to boost the volume if you need to play the piano loudly. Very often with digital pianos of this price range, the sound can become distorted when the volume is turned up. The clear, crisp sounds are no doubt helped by the 2 high-quality built-in speakers. So, if you want to play alongside other instruments or play outside, this is a great choice.

Playing the Yamaha P115

Yamaha have now included more instrument sounds in the P115. This has increased from 14 to 17 and there are also 10 pianist styles to choose from. This gives much more flexibility when playing the piano.

One really nice feature of this digital piano is its ‘virtual duet partner.’ You can choose a style to play and the piano will accompany you by playing the chords in the chosen style. This can allow you more freedom and creativity to create better melodies.

The piano comes with a sustain pedal and if you require a 3-pedal unit, then this can be purchased separately.

One drawback for some will be the lack of a display screen. However, not all musicians require this and especially for professional musicians, this isn’t necessary anyway.

The P115 comes with a USB port which allows connection to computers or iPads. For the later, a musician can download the “Digital Piano Controller” for iPads and iPhones. This makes it easier to control the keyboard from your device.

One downside where connections are concerned is the lack of a MIDI port. To get around this, some users connect a MIDI USB device which allows the keyboard to be connected to a computer with MIDI functionality.

However, there is a connection function that the P115 has which other digital pianos in the price range don’t – an audio line-out jack. This will allow you to easily connect the piano to external speakers.

There are some digital pianos on the market which are called portable, but in all practicality, they are just too heavy to lift. However, the Yamaha P115 can be called truly portable. It weighs only 26 pounds, making it fairly easy to lift and transport.

The built-in recording possibilities are quite limited. You can only save one song

The Verdict of the Yamaha P115

For a portable digital piano, the Yamaha P115 produces beautiful sounds and has a real “piano feel” to the keyboard. In its price range there are few that can rival the P115. Of course, more high range models will have more authentic sounds, but they will be much more expensive.

If you want your digital piano to grace your home, there is an additional option of a nice furniture stand. If you require more than the standard sustain pedal that comes with the piano, then a 3-unit pedal is available.

The quality of the P115 is so good that professionals will find it great to use. It can be used with or without an external amplifier and the volume from the speakers is enough to compete with other instruments.

If you teach music, and portability is important then is a great portable digital piano. It is also good for beginners, although the lack of the Yamaha Educational Suite may be a drawback for learners.

All in all, the Yamaha P115 is a great all-round portable digital piano.
